Ongoing Exhibition: Block Busters!

Nov 21, 09

By filling a gallery space with 15,000 KEVA wood building planks, the fully interactive exhibition, Block Busters, at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center enables everyone to discover their inner engineer, artist, architect, and child.

Inspired by the popularity of the KEVA blocks section of the Fleet’s recent Tinkering exhibition, Block Busters gives young and old alike a chance to unleash their imaginations as they turn piles of 4 ½-inch-long maple wood planks into a collection of surprisingly stable structures.

All KEVA blocks are completely uniform in shape and size and require no glue or connectors to create virtually anything visitors can dream up. Best of all, when construction of the tower, castle, bridge, skyscraper, or whatever is complete, builders will have almost as much fun destroying it, either piece-by-piece Jenga-style, or more efficiently with Godzilla-like swipes of the arm.

And for those who may suffer from “builder’s block” when confronted with a blank platform and building materials, do not fear. The exhibition space will feature a wide variety of (non-destructible) models and activity guides that present various construction challenges along with tips on how to complete them.

Rather than confound visitors, the exhibition aims to promote creativity, concentration, teamwork, and design skills and to encourage interaction among family members and other museum guests. What’s more, the KEVA blocks make intangible concepts like balance, proportion, stability, and symmetry become visibly accessible for budding architects.
