Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock 'n' Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash

Jun 12, 10 thru Sep 26, 10

Visitors can relive the energy, attitude, and essence of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest performers and performances through a collection of 100 photographs chosen by legendary rocker Graham Nash in the summer exhibition Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock 'n' Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash.

An accomplished picture-taker in his own right, Graham Nash sought to capture how photographers helped shape the image of rock ‘n’ roll through photographs that served as the primary means for fans to connect with musicians before the age of MTV and YouTube.

Taking Aim spans the entire 50 plus years of rock history with photographs of such legendary acts as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Tina Turner, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, alongside recent generation performers like Kurt Cobain and Notorious B.I.G.

But rather than a simple chronological arrangement, the exhibition groups the photographs thematically: live performance, private backstage moments, hotel room and studio rehearsals, portraits, life on the road, etc. This makes for compelling juxtapositions while providing a comprehensive look into the many facets of the life of a rock ‘n’ roller as seen through the eyes of one of their own.

In addition to Graham Nash, all of rock’s greatest photographers are represented, including Lynn Goldsmith, Henry Diltz, Pennie Smith, Anton Corbijn, Lee Friedlander, and Annie Leibovitz, whose iconic image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is included in the show.

To round out the visitor’s immersion in rock history, Nash’s personal insights into each photograph can be heard by anyone carrying a smart phone by punching in the code next to each image, which links to an audio track on YouTube.
